History of the Retired Men's Club of Cape Cod
The Retired Men's Club of Cape Cod was founded in March 1952 by the Reverend Carl F. Schultz, with 37 charter members. During the early years of the club there were two meetings each month, on the first and third Thursdays, with the principle activity being "The Retired Men's Club Chorus". This group performed throughout the area for many years, finally separating from the Club to become the "Retired Men's Chorus of Cape Cod" in 1988.
Meetings were held in the Carl F. Schultz Fellowship Hall of the Federated Church in Hyannis until 1983 when the club moved to Howe's Hall in the First Congregational Church of Yarmouth Port. In September of 2002 the Club moved their meetings to the Dennis Senior Center in East Dennis.
Membership reached 275 in 1982, dropping down to about 164 when the chorus split off, then declining to 135 by 1990. The low point in membership came in August 1994, before steadily rising to the present limit of over 250.
Candle pin bowling started in 1965 at the Orleans Bowling Center and then moved to Ryan Family Amusements in South Yarmouth in 1981, where a 8 team, 48 man league continues each season from September through May.
Club meetings were reduced to only the first Thursday of the month in the Fall of 1986, and in September of 2002, meetings were shifted to the second Thursday of the month. 1986 was also the year of the first golf tournament, a nine-hole affair at Bass river. Now the Club has five tournaments in the Spring and Fall at courses all around the area. In addition, many special events, open to all members and their guests, are held throughout the year.
